Course Description & Objectives

This course, based on Motivational Interviewing, will explore ways to work with clients who present with ambivalence, conflicting levels of motivation, and their difficulty making decisions. Topics will also include Stages of Change, verbal and nonverbal cues, language, beliefs, behaviors, values, and conformity with others. Case examples will focus on repetitive behavioral patterns (relationship problems), resistance to change, ambivalence and emotions, and interventions to use when clients discuss their pending decisions.

  • Identify language related to ambivalence
  • Recall 2 interventions to use


Instructor(s)

Dr. Phil Feldman, PhD, LCSW

Instructor

Dr. Feldman has 30 years of experience as a Clinical Director, Psychotherapist, and Supervisor. He is currently the Clinical Director at the Journey to Wellness substance abuse program in New Jersey. He has taught numerous clinical topics as an Adjunct Professor at the Rutgers University MSW Program since 1995. As a professional speaker, he has presented more than 300 Clinical CEU Seminars. He is also the author of "The Psychotherapy Manual," "Co-occurring Disorders manual," and "Shame Affect." (These are available on Aamazon.com). He completed his PhD at Rutgers, his MSW at Yeshiva University, and his BA at Emory College.
